(1588-1649) Уинтроп, Джон
Колониальный деятель. Происходил из аристократической семьи, окончил Кембриджский университет. В 1630 отправился в Америку с группой пуритан [Puritans]. С 1630 по 1649 (с перерывами) первый губернатор колонии Массачусетского залива [Massachusetts Bay Colony], родоначальник влиятельного семейства колониальных политиков и ученых, один из идеологов пуританизма в Новой Англии [New England]. Занимал также пост вице-губернатора. Содействовал утверждению в колонии режима теократической олигархии [Bible Commonwealth] и нетерпимости к инакомыслию. Его перу принадлежат несколько трактатов - ценных сводов идей и взглядов пуритан. Его личный дневник, который и сейчас является основным источником информации об этом периоде, впервые был издан в 1853 под названием "История Новой Англии с 1630 по 1649 год" ["The History of New England from 1630 to 1649"].
